Sadly, none of this.
Reasons that I need to move to Chicago:
1) I have already dated all of the Modern Orthodox Guys in NYC (not quite, but close)
2) Witzy wants to live in the Midwest, and she is my heterosexual life partner.
3) It is far from my parents' house. Maybe my father will stop pressuring me to move "home" if I go to a new city.
4) Trial run for making aliya(?)
5) Less expensive than New York.
6) It will be an adventure, just like going to Wah Fu* was an adventure. Except with fewer industrial plants. I think. Do they still pack meat in Chicago?
7) Maybe I'll finally get the song "Uptown Girl" out of my head. Every time that I take the Uptown 1/2/3 train, it starts.
8) Snow.
*If you don't know where Wah Fu is, consider yourself lucky.

1) It only seems that way because everyone seems alike on the first couple of dates (though if you think your dating stories might be bad, Curlygirl has a story on her blog that's just about the most disturbing I've heard).

Toronto, unless I am mistaken, is in Canada. How am I supposed to get working papers w/o a job? While that might closer approximate a dry-run for aliya, it is a higher barrier to entry.
Dude, you can't call it overrated without personal interaction. And going to Brooklyn once for Shabbas doesn't count.

You know, there are other times to visit a place than Shabbas, as you yourself pointed out. You could visit me on not Shabbas and not have to submit to the hippie minyanim in my 'hood.

Canada is not a good trial run for aliya because when you make aliya you become a citizen and can work. The best trial run for aliya is probably going to school/year program in israel. You get to live there, have something to do during the day, don't need to worry about work visas, and if you're lucky get funded for your year.
ReplyDeleteHarley, for someone that is shomer shabbat, finding a good shabbat community is more important than a weekday community. You can travel during the week all you want, but on Shabbat you are limited to what within walking distance of your place of residence. I have a friend that lives in Brooklyn Heights and loves it during the week. But she leaves almost every shabbat.
