The Chicago Plan

Like the Marshall Plan, but sadly, with fewer Marines. Far fewer.

Sadly, none of this.

Reasons that I need to move to Chicago:
1) I have already dated all of the Modern Orthodox Guys in NYC (not quite, but close)
2) Witzy wants to live in the Midwest, and she is my heterosexual life partner.
3) It is far from my parents' house. Maybe my father will stop pressuring me to move "home" if I go to a new city.
4) Trial run for making aliya(?)
5) Less expensive than New York.
6) It will be an adventure, just like going to Wah Fu* was an adventure. Except with fewer industrial plants. I think. Do they still pack meat in Chicago?
7) Maybe I'll finally get the song "Uptown Girl" out of my head. Every time that I take the Uptown 1/2/3 train, it starts.
8) Snow.

*If you don't know where Wah Fu is, consider yourself lucky.

Curlygirl- want to take my spot in my apartment?

My roommates would kill me.

1) It only seems that way because everyone seems alike on the first couple of dates (though if you think your dating stories might be bad, Curlygirl has a story on her blog that's just about the most disturbing I've heard).
2) Why the Midwest, out of curiosity? What's the appeal?
3) Now there's as good a reason as any.
4) But... but... Chicago is in the opposite direction (!)
5) Less expensive than Manhattan, yes. But more expensive than Brooklyn!
6) Yes, they still pack meat in Chicago. Believe it or not, I have a friend that works in the sausage industry (can't make this stuff up).
7) "Im gonna try for an uptown girl
Shes been living in her white bread world
As long as anyone with hot blood can
And now shes looking for a downtown
man
Thats what I am

And when she knows what
She wants from her tii..ii.iime
And when she wakes up
And makes up her mi..ii..iind"

...I'm not helping, am I.
8) No argument here, as I love the snow too.

PS - Have you ever thought about Toronto?

Don't try the Brooklyn argument, LT, she refuses to consider it. She has yet to visit my apartment. Not that I blame her.

It is true that if Annie lived in Brooklyn, she would see it is foolish to move to Chicago because heaven is just a Q train away.

No sleep 'til Brooklyn!

LT-
1) I need to read that dating story. And it isn't that they are all the same, it is that I have dated enough guys that there is no one left that is not the roommate/chevrusa/friend of someone I've dated.
2) Witzy is from the midwest and hated going to college in New York
4) It is the spirit of adventure, change of location that makes it a trial run. Can I actually pick up and move somewhere new.
5) Brooklyn= overrated. Despite what Harley may say to the contrary.
7) If I wasn't listening to Pandora right now I would kill you.

Toronto, unless I am mistaken, is in Canada. How am I supposed to get working papers w/o a job? While that might closer approximate a dry-run for aliya, it is a higher barrier to entry.

Dude, you can't call it overrated without personal interaction. And going to Brooklyn once for Shabbas doesn't count.

harley said...

You should just move to Annapolis.

Harley- I went for a party, not for shabbes. And I'll be there again for an engagement party this motzei shabbat.

Also, where in your 'hood could I daven?

I do love ships. And uniforms.

1) I know it can seem like that sometimes.

4) Yes, Toronto is in Canada - which makes it an even better trial run for aliyah, no?

5) Brooklyn... well... it's one of those places you either love or hate. I love to visit it. But I would hate to live there (I'm partial to NJ myself)

7)
I'm in love with an uptown girl
You know Ive seen her in her uptown world
Shes getting tired of her high class toys
And all her presents from her uptown boys
Shes got a choice

Ohhh whoah ohh ohh oh oaaoh ohh ohh oh whoah ohh ohh ohh oh oh.

Ohhh whoah ohh ohh oh oaaoh ohh ohh oh whoah ohh ohh ohh oh oh.

You know, there are other times to visit a place than Shabbas, as you yourself pointed out. You could visit me on not Shabbas and not have to submit to the hippie minyanim in my 'hood.

LT- I did make the comment that Toronto is closer to aliya. And the fact that you know all of those lyrics means that despite my earlier threat to your life, we can be friends.

Harley- If I live there, I would live there on shabbes. I'd still need somewhere to daven.

Canada is not a good trial run for aliya because when you make aliya you become a citizen and can work. The best trial run for aliya is probably going to school/year program in israel. You get to live there, have something to do during the day, don't need to worry about work visas, and if you're lucky get funded for your year.

Harley, for someone that is shomer shabbat, finding a good shabbat community is more important than a weekday community. You can travel during the week all you want, but on Shabbat you are limited to what within walking distance of your place of residence. I have a friend that lives in Brooklyn Heights and loves it during the week. But she leaves almost every shabbat.
